William "Bill" Snyder

William “Bill” Snyder, age 90, of Rensselaer passed away Saturday, December 20, 2014, at the Jasper County Hospital. He was the son of William and Lyda (Kelly) Snyder, born May 7, 1924, in Souix City, Iowa. Bill graduated from Spirit Lake High School with the class of 1942. He married Jeanne Bowron on April 7, 1947, in South Bend. They were the parents of 9 Children, Mary Yoder of South Dakota, Frances “Fran” (Roger) Howard of Elkhart, Margaret “Maggy” (Abe) Garber of Goshen, Joe (Linda) Snyder of Crown Point, Rita (Denny) Alfrey of Syracuse, IN. Virginia (Randy) Koch of Mishawaka, Jill (Bill) Andres of Brookston, Nancy (David) Walter of Rensselaer and Daniel (Darlene) Snyder of Goshen, IN. Bill has 18 Grandchildren, and 21 Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter Sandra Snyder, two brothers and two sisters. Bill was in the Army Air Corp. During World War II he served as a B-29 mechanic stationed in Guam. Bill started working at Farm Bureau Co-op Lumber Yard in Jasper County from 1948 to 1966 then moving to Elkhart County where he was the manager of the lumbar yard from 1966-1978. He returned to the lumbar yard in Jasper County here where he eventually retired in 1986. He was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight. He was a charter member of the 4th Degree Marian Assembly. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion Post #29.Bill delivered for Meals on Wheels and bowled on the Senior Bowling League. One of his latest adventures was going on the World War II Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2013. Friends will be received at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer Tuesday, December 23, 2014, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. There will be a rosary service held at 9:00 AM. Funeral mass for bill will be held at the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Don Davison officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Rensselaer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or Gibault School for Boys.
