Edward R. "Buddy" Pullins

Edward R. Pullins (87) of Rensselaer passed away May 27, 2009 in his home. He was born on December 10, 1921, to Emmett F. and Flora E. (Saidla) Pullins, in Rensselaer, both deceased. Buddy was a graduate of the Rensselaer High School class of 1939. Buddy has led a rich and full life with his varied occupations and many interests. Buddy was a photographer, outdoor writer and lecturer. He also enjoyed painting and sketching. Buddy served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 3 ½ years as a radio operator and was in Normandy during D+1. Buddy received a Purple Heart medal, 5 Campaign medals and in 2004 was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious service in ground combat at Normandy. He worked for 23 years at Jasper County Farm Bureau and was promoted to the position of Advertising and Promotions Manager. After retirement he returned to work, and found a different career as a Wal-Mart greeter and was employed for 11 years. He handled many of the Wal-Mart grants given annually by the store to not-for-profit groups in the community. He also worked with Duck’s Unlimited to foster and improve wildlife habitat and was instrumental in helping set up new chapters. He exhibited his collection of silver and turquoise jewelry and a few native or native inspired works at the Native Art & Artifacts at the Prairie Arts Council. He collected wildlife prints by some of America’s top wildlife artists. He gave lectures on Southwest Indian tribes for area schools and organizations. Buddy had many hobbies and activities. He was active in stock car racing and also owned stock car #007. In the 1960's he managed the Rensselaer Raceway. He enjoyed attending racing events and cheering for his favorite driver in car No. 92. He field tested equipment for six years for Abu Garcia Fishing Company and he wrote wildlife articles for the magazine “Hoosier Outdoors” and for the Rensselaer Republican. Buddy enjoyed fishing at Racoon Lake with his friends. In the fall deer hunting was on the agenda, whether it was with his bow, his gun or his camera. He enjoyed watching the wildlife and writing about it. Buddy was instrumental in building the Iroquois Archery Club. He served as president for many years and was very active in teaching and being a mentor to young children and adults in the sport of archery and life skills. He was very proud of a special archery student who has become a pro bow hunter from Rensselaer by the name of Brandon Reyes. He was a member of the Iroquois Archery Club, American Legion, VFW and 40 & 8 and served on the Community Services board. He served as president during the construction of the facility for the Community Services board. Buddy is survived by a niece, Viola Pullins, great nephews Johnny Joe Pullins and Roger (Pat) Pullins, all of Rensselaer, a great niece, Jackie Debshaw of DeMotte and William Pollock whom he raised. Buddy was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
