Herbert H. Johnston

Herbert H. Johnston, age 86, of DeMotte, IN, passed away at his residence on April 18, 2015. Herbert was born on September 24, 1928 in Decatur, IN, the son of Frank L. and Emma (Wolfe) Johnston. Herbert was a graduate of Decatur High School, class of 1946. He served his country proudly in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in the 2nd Infantry Division and E Company 9th Infantry. During his service he was awarded the combat infantry badge, four bronze stars and one silver star. On February 16, 1952 in Chicago, IL, he married Helene Elizabeth (Gross), who passed away in 1986. On May 2, 1992 in DeMotte, IN, he married Carol (Saynak) Chase, who survives. Herbert attended Heating & Cooling school and worked in the industry for over 40 years. He started at Murphy and Miller, Inc., Chicago, IL and retired from management at G.W. Berkheimer, Gary, IN in 1993. He was a member of the DeMotte American Legion Post 440 and the Shriner’s International Orak in Michigan City, IN. Herbert was a life time member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, a Rotarian in Chicago and leader of the Indian Guides. Herbert leaves behind his loving wife, Carol; beloved children, Russell (Cheri) Johnston of Cedar Lake, IN, Scott (Latisha) Johnston of Beaverville, IL, Douglas Johnston of Chesterton, IN; daughter-in-law, Madeline Johnston of Valparaiso, IN; Mark A. (Terri) Chase of Fishers, IN and Jill (Robert) Kunas of Champaign, IL; grandchildren, Nicholas (Katie) Johnston, Matthew (Tiffany) Johnston, Abby (Richy) Thomas, Melissa Johnston, Scott A. Johnston, Alex Johnston, Elizabeth Johnston, Jonathan M. Chase, Adam C. Chase, Eric (Kristen) Kunas, Emilee Kunas, Madeline Kunas, Trent Kunas, Malorie Bixenman and Melissa Weaver; great-grandchildren, Hannah Johnston, Allie Johnston, Rosalie Johnston, Anthony Weaver, Daniel Weaver, Melissa Weaver, Elijah Weaver, Luca Bixenman and Lyrica Bixenman; sister, Eileen Hess of Decatur, IN. Preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bradley Johnston; five sisters, Golda Streiby, Dorothy Robinson, Nell Alspach, Mary Colter and Donna Roop; two brothers, Ollie Johnston and Merlin Johnston. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 21 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM at the Jackson Funeral Service in DeMotte. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St Cecilia Catholic Church, DeMotte, on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 2:00 PM with Reverend Father Dave Hellman officiating. Interment will be held at the Cemetery of the Resurrection in DeMotte with Military Rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, the American Multiple Sclerosis Society, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Cancer Society
