Marvin Earle Nesius

Marvin Earle Nesius, age 78 of Rensselaer, IN passed away at his home, Wednesday afternoon, November 26, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Marvin was born March 27, 1936 in Rensselaer, IN the son of Fred J. and Bernice (Alson) Nesius. Marvin was raised on the family farm and attended Rensselaer High School, graduating in 1954. Marvin attended classes at Purdue University and graduated from the Indiana Agricultural Banking School. Marvin married Rose Klaus on December 28, 1955 in Rensselaer, IN. They were the parents of three children, Sharon (Kent) Mathew of Rensselaer, IN, Lora (Andy) Critser of Peoria, AZ and Michael Nesius who is deceased. He is survived by six grandchildren, Marinda (Kwan) Hunter and Angela Critser of AZ, Rachel Stanifer and Justin (Maggie) Nesius of Rensselaer, IN, Dan Mathew and Casey Nesius of Indianapolis, IN and by ten great-grandchildren, Alex, Amari Rose, Jayda, Zarya, Lawrence J, Adriane and ZaʹRyah Hunter of AZ, Ariel Stanifer, Hudson and Addison Nesius of Rensselaer, IN all whom he loved dearly. Also surviving is one sister, Mary Ann (Tom) Applegate of Brook, IN and one brother, Donal Nesius of Rensselaer, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael Nesius. While growing up, Marvin was an active 4-H member. He showed registered Cheviot sheep and successfully competed for 20 years, winning numerous titles at Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Iowa State Fairs, including the National Champion Cheviot Flock. He also participated at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago, IL. Marvin farmed until the age of 32, at which time, he accepted a full time position as Farm Loan Officer for Production Credit Association. After working many years for PCA, he joined the State Bank of Rensselaer as a Vice-President and remained there for ten years before accepting a position as Senior Vice-President with The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Rensselaer (Bank One) from which he retired in 1996. After retirement he worked two more years for Francesville (Alliance) Bank at the Rensselaer Branch. Marvin was the “Farmers’s Banker” for 37 years and he was proud to provide support for the continuation of the legacy of farm life. After retirement he enjoyed traveling to Arizona for winter residence in Sun City near family. Marvin and Rose visited their ancestral homeland in Germany twice from where their great grandfathers emigrated to America. He researched and recorded over 2000 family relatives and pictures on his computer genealogy program. Marvin was a baptized member of the First Christian Church of Rensselaer, IN having served as a Deacon and Trustee. He was a 35 year member of The Benjamin Harris Homes Board, serving his last 16 years as Chairman; 25 year member of the Jasper County Fair Board, having served as President, Secretary and Treasurer. Marvin was also a charter member of the Jasper County Retired Iron Club, during which time he restored several Allis Chalmers tractors. Marvin was an Amateur Radio Operator holding a FCC General’s License with the call K9MEN, which will now be designated a silent key. Marvin enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, shooting trap and raising Birmingham Roller Pigeons. He was a NRA certified rifle, pistol and shotgun instructor and also enjoyed archery. He was instrumental in the formation of the Rensselaer Archery Club and an active member of the Rensselaer Conservation Club. Marvin was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His self-less work ethic, dedication to the farming community, sense of humor and smile will be greatly missed by the many who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Jasper Foundation for the Michael Nesius Memorial Scholarship Fund, First Christian Church of Rensselaer, IN or Jasper County Home Health and Hospice.
