Winfried K. Rudloff

Winfried K. Rudloff of Lake Village, Indiana passed away on November 23, 2021. Winfried was born in 1929 in Ennepetal-Voerde, Germany. His educational pursuits took him from the Universitäts Hamburg and Heidelberg to the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry. He had a strong interest in Computer Science and dedicated his professional career as a Professor of Computer Science at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and Governor’s State University in University Park, Illinois. He was a passionate sailplane pilot for 77 years and a flight instructor of gliders and single/double engine aircraft. He encouraged countless students, family members, and strangers to take chances, learn new things and pursue their passions. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious FAA Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award for his efforts in promoting flight safety for over 50 years. A prolific scientific and satiric writer and poet, some of his publications can be viewed through his website. His family will miss him deeply and are comforted by the fact that he is again with the person he cherished profoundly, his wife Hedi. He is survived by his children Uwe (Christiane), Elke (Eric), Kai, and his grandchildren Anke, Aaron, Benjamin, Truman, Anneliese, as well as countless friends and family scattered across the globe. He is preceded in death by his wife Hedwig, sister Kriemhild, brother Burkhard, and parents Elfriede and Paul. Du fragst mich: was ist Segelfliegen, und ich weiß es Dir nicht recht zu sagen. Weißt Du, was ein Vogel empfindet, wenn er, hoch im Blau des Himmels kreisend, ohne einen Flügelschlag höher und höher steigt, bis Du ihn kaum noch wahrnimmst, um dann im Sturzflug wieder zur Erde zurückzukehren? Du sitzt in der Maschine, wartest auf das Zeichen zum Start, bist nur noch Konzentration, das Seil strafft sich langsam, dann, plötzlich drückt es Dich gegen die Rückenlehne. Die Kufe rumpelt über die Grasnarbe. Du hebst das Höhenruder, nur um Millimeter, einmal, ein zeitesmal, und da fühlst Du auch schon genügend Luft unter den Schwingen, und plötzlich bist Du frei. Sicherheitshöhe! denkst Du, und Sicherheitshöhe fühlst Du instinktiv und drückst den Knüppel etwas nach vorn: 50 m Sicherheitshöhe bedeuten Dein Leben! Solange Du bis zu dieser Höhe den Knüppel nicht anziehst, ist der Start ungefährlich, auch wenn das Seil einmal reißen sollte. Du blickst auf den Höhenmesser: 50, 60 m. Langsam ziehst Du den Knüppel an, und steil geht es nach oben, 100, 150, 250, 300, 400 m zeigt der Höhenmesser. Etwas schneller wird die Fahrt, ein plötzlicher Ruck, der Seilzug läßt nach, und Du klingst aus. Frei bist Du, nichts bindet Dich mehr an die Erde. In einer Linkskurve gleitest Du vom Startplatz fort. Da, eine Kleine Böe erfaßt die rechte Tragfläche. Querruder dagegen! Wieder eine, dann ein komisches Gefühl in der Magengegend, wie im Fahrstuhl. Noch ehe das Variometer zu steigen beginnt, fühlst Du ihn, Deinen Freund, den Thermik, wie er in der Fliegersprache genannt wird, Deinen Freund, den Du noch nie gesehen hast, der Dich liebevoll in seine Arme nimmt und höher un höher trägt. Querruder rechts, Seitenruder rechts! Steil legt die Maschine in die Kurve, Träge zieht das Variometer nach: 0, 1/2, 1 m Steigen pro Sekunde! Da, eine Abwärtsböe drückt auf die linke Fläche! Querruder dagegen! Wieder überfallen Dich die Böen. Wie kleine Teufelchen versuchen sie Dich aus dem Aufwind herauszuziehen. Plötzlich läßt die Fahrt nach. Ein Druck nach unten, die Maschine rauscht: herausgefallen! Abwind! Komm, alter Freund, verlaß mich nicht! Du fliegst Deine Kurve weiter, Du fühlst ihn wieder, und noch ehe das Variometer zu klettern beginnt, legst Du die Maschine gerade, fliegst so ein paar Sekunden, und legst sie dann wieder in die Rechstkurve. "Den Bart auskurbeln", sagt der Segelflieger und meint, daß er den Kern des Aufwindschlauches auffinden will. Erst wenn das Variometer kaum noch Änderungen zeigt, weißt Du, daß Du es geschafft hast, und langsam kreisend steigst Du höher: 450 m, 500, 600, 750! Ha, Freund Adebar! Auch er segelt, segelt wie Du! Vor lauter Lust klappert er mit seinem langen Schnabel, und plötzlich hörst Du Dich singen, irgend etwas, aus vollem Herzen! Und das Variometer steigt: 3 m Steigen, 3 m pro Sekunde! Du gewinnst Abstand, Abstand zum Erdboden und Abstand zu den kleinlichen Bedrängnissen des Alltags. Alles wird kleiner, die Häuser, die Menschen und Deine Sorgen. Auf einmal wird Dir bewußt: Du bist allein, allein mit Dir selbst, allein mit dem Wind und Deinen Gedanken. Du wirst eins mit der Maschine, jeder Nerv scheint sich in die Flügelspitzen zu verlängern. Du schwebst, steigst, körperlich, seelisch. Uralter Menschenheitstraum, hier findest Du seine Erfüllung! Ein Blick auf das Variometer: Das Steigen hat nachgelassen, und Dein Freund hat sich verflüchtigt. Wolkenlos ist heute die Thermik, häufiger jedoch bildet sie Wolken, zuerst kleine wollige Knäuel, die immer größer werden, die Dich ansaugen, da durch die Kondensationswärme der Luftfeuchtigkeit neuer Aufwind entsteht. Aber heute zeigt der Himmel kaum eine Wolke. Klar liegt die Bergstraße unter Dir mit ihren leuchtenden Frühlingsfarben. Trotzig grüßt die Wachenburg zu Dir herauf, vertraut erinnert sie Dich an Deine Flüge im Hangaufwind, wenn Du in 500 bis 600 m über den Baumwipfeln des Odenwaldes segeltest. An Tagen, wo ein steifer West blies, bist Du entlanggeflogen nach Weinheim, oder gar zum schönen Heidelberg, hast am Königstuhl eine Ehrenrunde gedreht, den Neckar gegrüßt und bist langsam zum Flugplatz zerückgekehrt. Doch heute weht ein schwacher Nordwind, und Du bist bei Deinem Thermikkreisen kaum vom Platz entfernt. In 1800 m Höhe legst Du die Maschine gerade, gleitest ein paar Kilometer nach Süden, fliegst in die Rheinebene hinein und wieder nach Norden, wo die Kamaraden treu Deiner harren, die Kamaraden, ohne die Du nicht nach oben kommst, die helfen, Deine Maschine startklar zu halten, ohne die Du ein Mensch bist, wie jeder andere, erdgebunden, klein. Erst durch ihre Hilfe wirst Du zum geflügelten Wesen, erst durch ihre Hilfe wird Dir das höchste Glück zuteil, wird der alte Traum zur Wahrheit: fliegen wie der Bussard, der plötzlich vor Dir kreisend auftaucht. Hallo, alter Freund, du weist mir wieder den Weg nach oben! Mittlerweile zeigt der Höhenmesser 900 m. Also abermals: Querruder, Seitenruder links und dem Bussard nach! Schon fühlst Du wieder Deinen Freund, schon steigt das Variometer, und Dein Flugzeug singt, es summt die Melodie Deines Herzens: Fliegen, Fliegen! Höher, immer höher! In 2000 m blickst Du auf Deine Uhr. Mein Gott, Deine Stunde ist beinahe vorüber! Die Kamaraden wollen auch fliegen, die Lust des Stegens genießen wie Du. Etwas melancholisch verläßt Du Deinen Freund, der Dich mit 2 m Steigen gewiß noch einige hundert Meter höher getragen hätte. In einer Steilkurve drehst Du in Richtung Flugplatz. Winzig siehst Du in der Ferne unten ein weißes Kreuz liegen, das Dir den Weg heimwärts weist. Gerade startet das "Baby", tief unten, und rechts von Dir über Hemsbach taucht auch plötzlich der Bergfalke auf, oder ist es die Mü 13? Wieder ein Blick auf die Uhr: Schon 3 Uhr und immer noch 1700 m hoch! Deine Zeit ist um! Querruder links, rechts Seitenruder und etwas Höhenruder ziehen: Slip gleitet die Maschine mit 6 bis 7 m/sec Fallen fahrstuhlartig nach unten. Um noch schneller hinunter zu gelangen, ziehst Du die Landeklappen, in 400 m drehst Du abschließend noch eine Steilkurve über dem Landeplatz und ab geht's zum Landeanflug, 300 m, 250 m, 150 m! Über dem Sportplatz erfassen Dich die Bodenböen. Fahrt, Fahrt ist das halbe Leben! Mit 90 km/h auf dem Geschwindigkeitsmesser rauscht Du heran. Der Boden steigt zu Dir herauf, so scheint es Dir, immer schneller. Langsam Fahrt wegnehmen! Den Knüppel anziehen, noch einen Millimeter, und noch einen, und schon setzt Du am Landekreuz auf. Das Rumpeln der Maschine bringt Dir eindringlich zum Bewußtsein, daß sie Dich wieder hat, die alte Mutter Erde. Du öffnest Deine Haube und atmest tief den würzigen Hauch der Äcker und Wiesen, und Du Fühlst: Fliegen, Traum der Wirklichkeit, unvergeßliches Erleben! W. Rudloff Soaring Flight Soaring? You ask me: what is soaring, and I don't really know how to tell you. Do you know what a bird feels when, circling high in the blue of the sky, it rises higher and higher without a flap of the wing, until you can barely make it out, only to return to earth in a swoop? You sit in the ship, wait for the signal to launch, you just have to concentrate, the rope slowly tightens, then suddenly it presses you against the backrest. The runner rumbles over the sward. You lift the elevator, only by millimeters, once, once, and then you feel enough air under the wings, and suddenly you are free. Safety level! you think, and you instinctively feel the safety height and push the stick a little forward: 50 m safety height means your life! As long as you don't pull the stick below this height, the launch is safe, even if the rope should break. You look at the altimeter: 50, 60 m. Slowly you pull the stick, and it goes up steeply, 100, 150, 250, 300, 400 m shows the altimeter. The ride becomes a little faster, a sudden jolt, the cable slackens, and you release. You are free, nothing binds you to the earth anymore. In a left turn you slide away from the launching point. There, a small gust catches the right wing. Ailerons against it! Another, then a strange feeling in the stomach area, like in the elevator. Before the variometer starts to rise, you can feel it, your friend, the thermal, as it is called in the sailplane pilot's language, your friend, whom you have never seen, who takes you lovingly in his arms and carries you higher and higher. Right aileron, right rudder! The ship leans steeply into the curve, the variometer slowly responds: 0, 1/2, 1 m climb per second! There, a downward gust is pressing on the left wing! Ailerons against it! The gusts attack you again. Like little devils they try to pull you out of the updraft. Suddenly the ride slows down. One push down, the ship roars: fell out! Downdraft! Come on, old friend, don't leave me! You continue to fly your curve, you feel it again, and before the variometer begins to climb, you straighten the ship, fly for a few seconds, and then put it back into the right curve. "Crank out the beard," says the glider pilot and says that he wants to find the core of the updraft tube. Only when the variometer shows hardly any changes do you know that you have made it, and slowly circling you climb higher: 450 m, 500, 600, 750! Ha, friend Stork! He also sails, sails like you! He rattles his long beak out of sheer passion, and suddenly you hear yourself singing, something, with all your heart! And the variometer goes up: 3 m climb, 3 m per second! You gain distance, distance from the ground and distance from the petty challenges of everyday life. Everything is getting smaller, the houses, the people and your worries. Suddenly you become aware: You are alone, alone with yourself, alone with the wind and your thoughts. You become one with the ship, every nerve seems to lengthen into the tips of the wings. You float, you rise, physically, emotionally. Ancient human dream, here you will find its fulfillment! A look at the variometer: the climb has subsided, and your friend has evaporated. Today the thermal is cloudless, but more often it forms clouds, at first small woolly pebbles, which get bigger and bigger, which suck you in, because the heat of condensation of the air humidity creates a new updraft. But today the sky hardly shows a cloud. The Bergstraße is clearly below you with its bright spring colors. The Wachenburg greets you defiantly, familiarly reminding you of your flights in the upwind when you sailed 500 to 600 m above the treetops of the Odenwald. On days when a stiff West was blowing, you flew along to Weinheim, or even to beautiful Heidelberg, did a lap of honor at the Königstuhl, greeted the Neckar and slowly returned to the airfield. But today a weak north wind is blowing, and you are hardly removed from the place in your thermal circling. At an altitude of 1,800 m you lay the ship straight, glide a few kilometers south, fly into the Rhine plain and then north again, where the comrades wait for you, the comrades without whom you cannot get up, they help keep your ship ready to go, without whom you are human, like everyone else, earthbound, small. Only through their help will you become a winged creature, only through their help will you be given the greatest happiness, and the old dream will come true: fly like the buzzard that suddenly appears circling in front of you. Hello, old friend, you show me the way back up! Meanwhile the altimeter shows 900 m. So again: aileron, rudder left and after the buzzard! You feel your friend again, the variometer rises and your plane sings, the melody of your heart hums: Fly, fly! Higher, higher and higher! In 2000 m you look at your watch. My God, your hour is almost over! The comrades also want to fly, enjoy climbing high like you do. You leave your friend a little melancholy, who would certainly have carried you a few hundred meters higher with the 2 m climb. In a steep curve you turn towards the airfield. In the distance you can see a tiny white cross lying below, which shows you the way home. The "Baby" is just launching, way below, and the Bergfalke suddenly appears to your right above Hemsbach, or is it Mü 13? Another look at the clock: already 3 o'clock and still 1700 m high! Your time is up! Pull aileron left, right rudder and a little back stick: With 6 to 7 m/sec the ship drops like an elevator. To get down even faster, you pull the landing flaps, in 400 m you turn a steep curve over the landing area and off you go to the landing approach, 300 m, 250 m, 150 m! Above the sports field you are seized by the ground gusts. Airspeed, airspeed is half the battle! You rush up with 90 km/h on the airspeed. The ground rises towards you, it seems to you, faster and faster. Slowly level out! Pull the stick, another millimeter, and another, and you touch the landing cross. The rumble of the ship brings you to the conscious awareness that it has you back, the old mother earth. You open your hood and breathe deeply the spicy breath of the fields and meadows, and you feel: flying, living dream, unforgettable experience! W. Rudloff
