Mary DeVries

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Mary DeVries, on December 22, 2020 at the age of 74. Mary was born on September 30, 1946 in Rensselaer, Indiana, the daughter of the late Clarence and Henricka (Schoonveld) Sipkema. Survived by her loving husband, Alvin DeVries of DeMotte and her children: Julie (Matthew) Sather of Mokena, IL; Pamela (Dean) Shafer of Holland, MI; Shelley (Scott) Plaggemars of Holland, MI and six dearly loved grandchildren: Rachel and Lindsey Sather, Luke and Leah Shafer, Eric and Reuben Plaggemars. Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Sipkema. Mary was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. She loved being surrounded by her family and friends always desiring to host people at her home or lake house. She certainly made sure all whom she loved were fed well and provided with a whole lot of her wonderful baked goods. Her favorite times of year involved big gatherings. Holidays were always made special by her. Summertime and warm weather was her favorite times not just so she could tend to her beautiful flower gardens and yard, but also to spend time at Winona Lake and invite people to join the fun and make these special memories. Her legacy is really the impact of her faith. Mary was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and has faithfully served and loved the people of this church family throughout her adult life. She poured her heart into groups of youth at the church who still comment on the impact of those days in their lives. She has had an impact on the faith of all of her children, grandchildren as well those for whom she was like a second mom. She deeply loved those around her and she was deeply loved in return. A private Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, December 26, 2020 for immediate family only at Holland Cemetery with Pastor Rick VanderWall officiating. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the Spring of 2021 with a date to be determined. We look forward to gathering safely and sharing stories of love for Mary and her love for others.
