William R. "Bill" Gehring

William R. Gehring, age 91, of Rensselaer, Indiana, passed away peacefully at I.U. Health in Lafayette on February 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and many grandchildren. Bill was born on June 7, 1933, in North Judson, Indiana, the son of William Matthew & Lillian (Dolezal) Gehring. Bill graduated from North Judson High School, the Class of 1951. He attended St. Joseph’s College for two years and was then drafted into the U.S. Army where he served his country in Germany during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he married the love of his life, Margaret A. “Peg” Capouch, who survives. Bill and his brother were co-owners of Gehring Farms, where they farmed in Newland, Indiana. Bill was active in his community and served on the Jasper County Sheriff’s Merit Board, the Mint Industry Research Council, the American Legion, Post #29, a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Dwenger Council 1881 and was a long-time member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Bill, in his later years, enjoyed growing roses and tending to his vegetable garden and caring for his yard. He enjoyed traveling with his family and spending the winters in Scottsdale, AZ. However, he was most proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed cheering them on in their sporting activities. He is survived by his wife, Peg, eight children, Dr. David (Mara) Gehring of Washington D.C; William “Bill” (Gwynne) Gehring of Hebron, IN; Donna (Stephen) Chalko of Fishers, IN; Barbara (David) Skinner, Susan (Gregg) Kanne, James (Tamara) Gehring and Lynn (Chris) Meeks, all of Rensselaer and Steven (Michele) Gehring of Mishawaka, IN. Also surviving are two brothers, Dan (Carol) Gehring & Rev. Robert Gehring; sister-in-law Elsie Cepican of Scottsdale, 23-grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Joseph Gehring & one sister, Mary Ellen Walter. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, from 9:00AM to 12:00PM at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Rensselaer. A Funeral Mass will be held at the church at 12:00PM with Father Rick Nagel officiating. Interment will be at Saint Jacob Cemetery in North Judson, Indiana with full military rites.
